Spondylosis
Spondylosis is a condition that affects the spine, particularly the vertebrae and the discs between them. It’s commonly associated with aging and wear and tear on the spine over time. It is osteoarthritis of the spine.
While spondylosis can attack any park of the spine, it is generally seen in the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) regions of the spine.
Cervical Spondylosis
This is a degenerative disease that affects your neck region, specifically the vertebrae C1 to C7. Cervical spondylosis is a common condition, especially in older adults. It’s estimated that over 85% of people over the age of 60 have evidence of cervical spondylosis on imaging studies like X-rays or MRI scans.
Symptoms
Neck pain and stiffness.
Headaches at the base of the skull.
Limited neck movement.
Arm weakness or tingling.
Upper back or shoulder pain.
Possible balance problems.
Numbness in your shoulders, arms, or hands
Lumbar Spondylosis
Lumbar spondylosis affects the lower back, specifically the vertebrae L1 to L5. Age is a significant risk factor for lumbar spondylosis, with the condition becoming more common as people get older
Symptoms
Lower back pain and stiffness.
Sciatica: Pain in the buttocks, thighs, or legs.
Muscle weakness or numbness in legs/feet.
Tingling sensations in legs/feet.
Reduced lower back flexibility.
Possible balance or coordination issues.
Spondylosis risk factors include age, genetics, occupation (especially strenuous jobs), lifestyle habits (like obesity and smoking), spinal trauma, certain medical conditions, and gender. Managing these factors through lifestyle changes and regular medical care can help prevent or manage spondylosis effectively.
