Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterized by stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion in the shoulder joint.
As the tissues in your joints thicken and stiffen, scar tissue forms gradually. Consequently, the shoulder joint lacks sufficient room for proper rotation. This leads to a limited range of movement, and stiffness in your shoulder. Thus, the name – ‘frozen shoulder’
Frozen shoulder can be caused by inflammation of the shoulder capsule, prolonged shoulder immobilization due to injury or surgery, and underlying conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, or cardiovascular disease.
Frozen shoulder typically develops slowly in three stages
Freezing Stage:
Gradual onset of pain and stiffness in the shoulder, often worsening over time. Range of motion becomes limited.
Frozen Stage:
Stiffness and pain persist, and shoulder movement is significantly restricted.
Thawing Stage:
Pain and stiffness gradually improve, and range of motion begins to return, although recovery may take several months to years.
